This simple exercise can really open up the lungs and help you breathe much better. It is gently detoxifying as well.
New results presented at 3rd European Lung Cancer Conference in Geneva, Switzerland show important steps being made to improve the diagnosis and treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma , an aggressive cancer of the outer lining of the lungs caused by asbestos exposure.
Micro RNAs speed diagnosis
Australian researchers have identified a small molecule that is more abundant in the blood of people with the deadly lung disease mesothelioma than in healthy people. Their findings bring scientists a step closer to being able to diagnose mesothelioma earlier than is currently possible.
At present diagnosing mesothelioma depends on the availability of a lung biopsy that contains enough tumor tissue. However suitable biopsies are not always available, which can leave doctors uncertain about the patient's diagnosis, sometimes resulting in a delay to the start of treatment. "If doctors could use a diagnostic marker based on a simple blood test to help with diagnosis, it could circumvent the problem of availability of tumor tissue and help to accelerate the diagnostic process," says Dr Michaela Kirschner from the Asbestos Diseases Research (Concord Hospital Campus) in Sydney, who reported the new findings.
TUESDAY, April 17 (HealthDay News) -- Medicare patients who have advanced non-small cell lung cancer appear to get no survival benefit from adding the drug Avastin to standard chemotherapy, researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute report.
An earlier trial had found that Avastin (bevacizumab) did improve survival, but not in patients aged 65 and older. Even so, the researchers noted, most patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer are 65 and older and Medicare still covers the cost of the drug.
"A drug that we were just ecstatic about in 2006, we have to be more circumspect about," said lead researcher Dr. Deborah Schrag, an oncologist at Dana Farber, in Boston.
Avastin should be used judiciously, she added, noting that "older patients should discuss it with their doctors, but we cannot say it provides a survival advantage based on these data."
However, Schrag does not think Medicare needs to reconsider funding Avastin. "It may be that it helps some patients," she said. "But we should not assume that Avastin needs to be part of the treatment package."

About this book In the definitive history of a twentieth-century public health disaster, Alan Derickson recounts how, for decades after methods of prevention were known, hundreds of thousands of American miners suffered and died from black lung, a respiratory illness caused by the inhalation of coal mine dust. The combined failure of government, medicine, and industry to halt the spread of this disease-and even to acknowledge its existence-resulted in a national tragedy, the effects of which are still being felt.... |

I imagine that any kind of exercise can enhance lung function. Just don't take beta carotene, it actually increases your chances for lung cancer especially if you are/were a smoker.
Timeline of benefits
What many people
I was told that an old trick when someone was suffering from lung problems (asthma, or an infection) was to use an onion and mustard poultice, but I don't know how to make one. Any advice is welcome.
"Old trick" ? You mean old myth?
The fact that onion or mustard is no longer believed to have any effect on asthma or a lung infection should give you a clue that this 'treatment' does not work.
